Proud Checkmat Partner

Bay Jiu-Jitsu is part of the Checkmat team, a professional Brazilian jiu-jitsu team led by brothers Leonardo VieiraRicardo Vieira, and Leandro Vieira. The team was founded in 2008 and since then it’s considered one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission schools of all times. Its name was chosen in reference to the chess tactics and strategies that are very similar to jiu-jitsu- every move is important and leads to victory. Checkmat has locations around the world including Brazil, Sweden, USA, England, Japan, Denmark, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Paraguay and more. Besides molding BJJ fighters to compete in GI, Checkmat also provides a very consistent training program to improve specific abilities and skills for MMA fighters. MMA is the sport on the rise worldwide and the Brazilian jiu-jitsu concepts are considered a must have in rings around the world. Some of the most successful MMA fighters nowadays have trained BJJ with Checkmat black belts. Since 2012, Leandro Vieira is the BJJ head coach at the American Kickboxing Academy – also considered one of the best MMA teams – and is responsible for fighters such as Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold, and Josh Thomson. Other MMA fighters previously trained by Checkmat include Dan Henderson, Vitor Belfort, BJ Penn, Junior dos Santos, Demian Maia and more.

“I cannot sing enough praise for Bay Jiu-Jitsu. Big thumbs up to Stephan Goyne for the amazing job creating a friendly atmosphere where jiu-jitsu is taught to one and all while enabling and encouraging its study and practice as both an art and a sport. The academy is a big part of what made my last two visits to the Bay Area the amazing times they were. I will go back every chance I get in the future.”

“I’ve been training here at Bay Jiu-Jitsu since 2011 and love it. No egos, friendly people, and good mix of men and women as well as people of all ages and goals. I shopped around quite a bit for a BJJ gym, and once I landed here I knew I’d found where I wanted to train.”

“I was feeling nervous my first day, but the students were so friendly that I felt like I had knew them from long ago. They all helped me, and made sure that I was not left out. The students and the instructor were very helpful. My first choice.”

“I took my first ever jiu-jitsu class here with Stephan and it was a blast! I have to admit, I was pretty intimidated at first having no prior experience, but Stephan made me feel very at ease and was an amazing teacher. Everyone in the class was so friendly and encouraging. Oh and did I mention this is an amazing workout? I workout regularly (run, spin, hike), but this definitely worked some new muscles. I would absolutely recommend coming here!”
